What does an FB business page with thousands of likes tells you? On the face of it, it appears that business is doing pretty good. After all people in excess of 10k can’t be wrong. Or, what about a twitter account with thousands of followers? Must be a celebrity or well-liked figure? Even though these assumptions can be right, but there’s another explanation as well i.e. chances are, that they have purchased the likes or the followers.

In case, the businesses have accumulated all those likes or followers genuinely, the trust and popularity is worth thousands of dollars, but when it comes to buying likes or followers, 10k likes are worth hardly 3 – 4 hundred dollars. So, you should opt for the easy way and purchase likes, followers, or plus ones? Instead of spending lots of time on the content, marketing, and interacting with customers to make them click on the like button? The answer is a big No; keep on reading to have a detailed answer.

Ruined the very purpose of Social Media:

It will be a long debate if we were to talk about the legality or morality of buying or selling likes or followers. Needless to say, Social media websites like Facebook or Twitter don’t approve of such practices in their TOS, but those who are involved in this practice will present many arguments to prove how it is perfectly fine, but the legality is not the point. Some buy these likes or followers while believing in the notion of “fake likes will encourage more and more real people to like”. I often see people presenting the argument that having 5 – 10 likes is a turn off for people who visit your page, and they are more likely to click on “like” button if they can see thousands of people liking that page.

I don’t know about others, but I have never liked or disliked a page on the basis of the number of “likes”. People like a page because of its content, and not because they are looking to become a part of the crowd. Besides, if your FB page has got just 5 – 10 likes after months of efforts, you are probably missing the boat in one way or another and you need to revise your social media marketing strategy.

Likes are just the tip of the iceberg:

Suppose, the abovementioned arguments doesn’t convince, and you decide to go and purchase those “likes” or “plus one” packages, what’s next? Sorry to break it to you, but that’s just about it. You will hardly be able to get anything out of these dummy contacts. They’ll hardly give a visit to your website, let alone purchasing anything from you.

I have been in charge of marketing many websites, and I’ll take 100 genuine guys liking my page over 10,000 purchased ones any day, knowing that I’ve got a chance to convert some of those 100 people, whereas the chances of getting anything out of those dummy ones are almost impossible.

The right approach:

If you are really interested in increasing your likes or Plus Ones, and you are ready to invest some time and money, there are much better ways to do that. The best method is to start some sort of a competition or sweepstakes? Or, you can simply offer the people discounts like “123 inkjets coupons” or “4ikjets discount” as a reward for liking your page.

Rest assured, these users are more likely to stay and make repetitive purchases, especially if you can focus on making a relationship, rather than looking and fretting upon the numbers.
