How Freelance websites have been unfavorable to SEO industry

Many people who are looking to work from home, and earn some part time income, often surf through the Internet to find freelance jobs. Freelancing works wonder for both, the employees and the employers. Employers get to save quite some money because they can source and hire professionals residing in low cost regions and get the job done at cut-rates. On the other hand, employees can have the luxury of working from home, at a time that suits them best, and they can utilize the time that otherwise gets wasted on traveling or getting ready for your office.

Freelance websites are doing a great job as a platform for employers to post jobs and employees to make their bids on these jobs including content writing, web designing, development, and search engine optimization. However, when it comes to Search Engine Optimization industry, freelance websites have been a little unfavorable to the industry. Remember that I m not blaming these websites, as they are acting as a platform and nothing else.

Professionals offering SEO services at dirt-cheap prices:

Before starting to write this paragraph, I went to a couple of freelance websites and searched for SEO jobs, and lo, I see people looking for comprehensive SEO services with whopping budgets like $50 or $80 per month. And the best part is, there are some service providers who will readily take that job? Makes me wonder how can someone provide an all-inclusive SEO service at such low rates? That’s not even anywhere near the breakeven price, even if you are working from a low-cost region. Personally I don’t have a problem with that, but it actually creates a misconception amongst the customers, and every now and then you will come across a client who is looking for “results” and willing spend a measly budget of $50 or $60 and considering it more than enough.

Some go one step ahead; they will hook up this $50 payment with results like making their website appear on top for certain keywords like “1and1 coupons” or “network solutions voucher”.
Incompetent ones giving SEO a bad name:

The problem with the people offering their services for $50 per month, they hardly know a thing about SEO. Result is a disgruntled customer who goes around bashing SEO professionals on all forums. Problem is, anybody can sign up with these services as an SEO professional, and some unskilled guys get to bid for the jobs, pretending to be real professionals. When you are trying to get the clients from Google, at least you need to have a working website, where the clients can have an idea of your expertise from the quality of your website and content. Because they are not really competent, they rely on using all kinds of spammy or black hat methods. After some months of little or no results, client steps out of the contract but the damage is done, the clients get wary of SEO services provider. It’s hard to satisfy a client who has had couple of bad experiences in the past. Remember the saying … one bitten by a snake dreads a rope for decade?

Spoiling the concept of Link Building:

Link building is an integral part of Search Engine Optimization. You must have seen those job postings where someone is looking for a bunch of high PR and do-follow links at “wholesale” rates like $5 per link, like high PR and relevant back links are growing on the trees. To be brutally honest, when you are purchasing 25 PR 5 links for $50 (I haven’t made up this number, I actually saw a job posting and some bids on that), you should be having no doubts about the worthlessness of those links. And the unavailability of such short-cuts (no matter how worthless they are) is what keeps people from working hard and acquiring a back link in a more natural way.
